The birth of low-cost airlines over a decade ago means it’s more affordable than ever to visit European cities. The continent is now a much smaller place. Here are four examples of interesting, inspiring, holiday-worthy cities that are accessible from other parts of Europe by low-cost airlines.
Athens, Greece
Located in southern Europe, the beautiful nation of Greece plays host to its capital city Athens. Rich in history, architecture and fantastic weather, it’s a great place for a short break as long as you don’t mind leaving knowing that you didn’t see everything!
Athens International Airport (https://www.aia.gr/traveler/) is served by the following low-cost airlines
Ryanair, from the following European cities:
London, Paphos, Brussels, Berlin, Budapest, Milan, Rome, Bratislava, Warsaw
EasyJet, from the following European cities:
Berlin, Edinburgh, Hamburg, London, Milan, Rome, Naples, Paris (seasonally)
Faro, Portugal
At the southernmost point of Portugal, Faro is a beautiful city in the renowned Algarve region of the Iberian peninsular. People come to Faro for three reasons, sun, sun and sun, even more so now low cost airlines have an established presence at Faro International Airport (http://www.ana.pt/en-US/Aeroportos/algarve/Faro/Pages/HomeFaro.aspx)
You’ll find good air links from the following European cities:

Gothenburg, Sweden
It’s very easy to ignore northern Europe when considering holiday destinations as the image we have often includes snow-covered terrain and reindeer. But this certainly isn’t the the case all year round, Gothenburg is a picturesque city on the Swedish coast near Norway. Along with the unmistakable Nordic streets that are made almost entirely of wood, Gothenburg is the location of Scandinavia’s largest theme park ‘Liseburg’ (http://liseberg.com/en/home) - if you’re into that kind of thing!
Despite its northern location, it’s surprisingly easy to get to. Ryanair flies there from:
Alicante, Barcelona, London, Malaga, Alghero, Edinburgh, Malta, Marseille, Palma de Mallorca, Pisa, Rome, Zadar
Wizz Air flies there from:
Belgrade, Budapest ,Gdansk, Skopje, Tuzia, Warsaw
Both Airlines fly into Gothenburg Landvetter Airport (http://www.swedavia.com/landvetter/) which is slightly further from the city than the “city” airport.
Nice, France
The south of France conjures up pictures of beaches, drinking coffee outdoors and inexplicably fantastic breakfast pastries. Alongside the theatres, casinos and museums, it makes Nice a perfect choice for a short or even a longer holiday.
If you’re thinking of making plans, Nice Cote d’Azur Airport (http://en.nice.aeroport.fr/) is only 4 miles from the city centre.
Ryanair flies there from:
Dublin
EasyJet flies there from:
Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Bordeaux, Bristol, Brussels, Geneva, Hamburg, Lille, Lisbon, Liverpool, London, Lyon, Marrakech, Nantes, Naples, Paris, Rome, Toulouse, Venifour
