''Two roads diverged in a wood. I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference'' - Robert Frost
The new year. A time when self improvement is often at the forefront of the mind. What better excuse to travel.
Travel is transformational. As a process it challenges and changes our perspectives, it allows us to evolve, to grow and to become adept at adapting. Travel enriches our core being, which in turn enriches our lives, and enhances our ability to form meaningful connections with others.
We could continue to look at ways in which travelling counters more structured forms of therapeutic intervention and offers a holistic means of addressing inner conflicts. Instead let's propose five reasons why you should start organising your next trip, now - and having taken time to read our guidance, it would be rude of you not to.
1. It will boost your self esteem.
From selecting a destination and accommodation, to creating and enjoying your experience, to arriving home and sharing your stories with others, travelling will make you more confident in yourself.
2. You will become more flexible - and more relaxed.
It is inevitable, with travelling comes the need to be able to adapt. Flights, plans and luggage will at some point be delayed; and although jumping up and down whilst rudely gestating may be beneficial to the amusement of your spectators (I mean fellow travellers) it will not prove conducive to optimal blood pressure, or your holiday spirit. So stop, take a deep breath and embrace it as part of your experience.
3. It will broaden your horizons.
To quote Mary Anne Radmacher 'one is never the same having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world'. Experience of other people's lives, lifestyles and cultures cultivates awareness of commonalities, diminishing of pre held beliefs and unconditional positive regard for others. Additionally it can lead us to identify (or accept) the things which we need, or would like to change in our own lives; inspiring and equipping us with the strength and inclination to make these changes happen.
4. It will enhance your social skills, and social life, as through your travels you push boundaries to connect both with your self and others. Friends will be made all over the world.
5. It will increase your professional capacities and employability through a combination of the points above.
